THE FESTIVAL EXPERIENCE

Len Johnson

Santa Fe was my first festival experience.  At my first screening, I was honored to have my boyhood friend John Blair fly down to be with me, all the way from Billings.  I gave him an inaugural dvd.  John is a good man.

Festivals are a win-win for everyone.  The film makers get much needed publicity and credentials for their films and documentaries.  The festivals get revenue and a chance to work at something other than customer service for IBM.  The public gets interesting works outside the major Hollywood studios.  (Although there are some studio projects with budgets well into the millions at festivals). It is great fun with a real humble kinsmanship, and I will always look at Santa Fe with reverence.  They made me feel like a film maker.

My one lesson — Chris Gore:

If you read anything about Chris Gore and Len Johnson, know that what Chris Gore posted as an email exchange between us is altered by Chris Gore. This is a guy who makes a living being as nasty as possible and then trying to get a reaction. He literally came into my life from out of the blue and lied and stole artwork fom my web site.

Maybe that's because his "film" didn't receive the billing at a film festival that mine did. I don't know. But I do know that as a filmmaker, Chris Gore is the single most disappointing person I've encountered along the way. I hope I never have to deal with this man again.
